Understanding Burn Injuries: Degrees, Treatments & More

Although burns are perhaps one of the most “common” injuries, they are also some of the most severe. Not only can they be debilitatingly painful, but they can result in long-term or life-long scars and disfigurements.

Burns are often categorized into three different degrees, which include the following:

  • First Degree – This is the most superficial of burns that affects the outermost layer of skin. Symptoms often include red skin, some minor swelling, pain, and dry skin. Once the skin cells begin to shed, the signs will disappear. These burns will usually heal within a week or so.
  • Second Degree – These are more serious than first degree burns as they damage beyond just the first layer of skin. Symptoms can include blisters, extremely red skin, soreness, and “wet” looking skin. In some cases, the burns can take more than a few weeks to heal and require frequent bandaging.
  • Third Degree – These are the worst type of burns as they damage every layer of the victim’s skin; in some cases, the damage can extend to the blood, organs, and even bones. However, despite their severity, third degree burns are not the most painful. In fact, because the nerves suffer such extreme damage, many victims do not feel any pain at all. Symptoms include skin that is “waxy” looking, dark brown, charred, or that looks like leather. Time for healing will depend on the individual burn.

Treatment for burn injuries will depend entirely on the degree of the burn, the amount of area affected, and more. Treatment options can range from bandages to skin grafts and even cosmetic surgery.
